Artist
Phạm Trinh
— a lifetime
devoted to art

Though born in the land of Tây Sơn, his heart has always been deeply bound to Huế. Even while living and dedicating his art here, he carried within him an unending sense of longing. Thus, throughout his artistic journey, each of his works is imbued with the lingering echoes of the Nguyễn dynasty, gently interwoven with the rural memories that shaped his childhood.

Artist Phạm Trinh
— a lifetime devoted to art

"Đường vô xứ Huế quanh quanh,
Non xanh nước biếc như tranh họa đồ.
Nhớ em anh cũng muốn vô,
Sợ truông nhà Hồ, sợ phá Tam Giang."

As a child, artist Phạm Trinh was just a farmer's boy, herding buffaloes to the fields each day, working the land, never having stepped beyond the village gate. Yet one noon, resting after a morning in the fields and revising his lessons, he came across those verses. In that very moment, the image of Huế — "green mountains and blue waters like a painted landscape" — unfolded vividly in his mind, as if he had once been there.

He would later joke, "Perhaps in a past life, I was already bound to Huế." And from that moment on, he quietly set his path: to rise beyond poverty, to make his way to Huế, and to pursue his dream.

"Shadows of the Past" — Phạm Trinh

Reimagining the faces of emperors, mandarins, and empresses in their ornate robes, alongside vermilion halls, citadel gates, and ceremonial screens, Shadows of the Past evokes the splendour of a bygone era. The series is imbued with a quiet nostalgia for the Nguyễn dynasty — once radiant, now softened and faded by time and war. Each work becomes a fragment of memory, where the past flickers, dissolves, and drifts like smoke through the spaces of Huế.

  • Conceived over nearly 30 years
  • Inspired by personal memories, historical records of the Nguyễn dynasty, and visits to the Imperial City and royal tombs
  • Created in acrylic on canvas, unified by a consistent style and thematic thread
  • Comprising 21 works, numbered from 0 to 20
  • The theme continues to be explored and developed
